        Anind K. Dey is the Charles M. Geschke Professor, and Director of the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. He is the Principal Investigator for the Google-funded open Internet of Things project at CMU. He leads the Ubicomp Lab, which performs research at the intersection of ubiquitous computing, human-computer interaction and machine learning, in the areas of the Internet of Things, mobile computing, health and sustainability among others. He has authored over 100 papers on these topics, serves on the editorial board of several journals, and is a member of the prestigious CHI Academy. Anind received his PhD in computer science from Georgia Tech, along with a Masters of Science in both Computer Science and Aerospace Engineering. He received his Bachelors of Applied Science in Computer Engineering from Simon Fraser University

        Over the past 20 years, there has been a huge change in the mobile technologies we use and the applications we have available to us. We have gone from a world where location-based technologies only existed in a handful of labs, to one where it is commonplace used by millions, if not billions of people every day. However, surprisingly, we haven't progressed much past location-based systems in terms of true innovation, for building intelligent, adaptive and compelling mobile systems. In this talk, I will review the last few decades of mobile and context-based systems, and point out opportunities for building more compelling instances. In particular, I will highlight the value of studying individual routines and behaviors as a mechanism for creating valuable adaptive mobile systems. This will include work in algorithms, modeling, and application development, in a variety of domains from automotive to health to education.
